With Profile’s full time presence in China entering into its third year, Winnie Chui, Area Director gives an insight into our developments in the region.
"The development of the hospitality industry here in the region is growing at such an unprecedented rate, to the extent that China has become the fifth-largest tourism country in the world" says Winnie and as a result the demand for high quality hotel executives has been huge, not just in Beijing and Shanghai but also in the key development regions including Xian, Guilin, Guangzhou, Hanjou and Sanya. "Exiting times indeed and the combination of a local presence combined with the support and backing of Profile’s Global network of contacts have proved a very successful formula with high conversions rates on the multitude of positions we are busy filling; a win/win both for Clients and Candidates."
Not that Profile is new to Southeast Asia and our long established relationships with companies such as Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Ritz-Carlton and InterContinental having been the bedrock of our success – we feel equally privileged to work with fast-growing companies such as Banyan Tree and with newcomers to the region such as Jumeirah.
The Shanghai Office also acts as a gateway for talent re-locating to the region allowing new candidates the benefit of our in-depth knowledge.
Assignments handled across the whole spectrum of executive positions in hotels handled by the Shanghai Office cover a fairly wide range of geographical areas including Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia, Japan Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Korea.

In order to meet the demand for our services, we are pleased to have been able to put together a team of specialists with hotel management experience or related backgrounds, working from modern offices conveniently located in Shanghai’s Pudong district.

The official opening date of the office was 9th January 2008 and was attended by James Hey, Profile Group Executive Director who said “Profile Shanghai has been a success story right from the start and I am delighted with the team that Winnie has put together and we are determined to continue our expansion of satellite offices in other parts of the world to provide a level of service that can be without parallel” as he cut the lucky ribbon, adding:
Winnie chose 9th January 2008 for good Chinese fortune. The number “9” symbolizes “Longevity” and the number “8” in year”2008” means “wealth” in Chinese. The name of the office building “Yu An” whereby “Yu” also means “wealth” and “An” means “Peace” in Chinese. Under the Chinese culture, “Good Fortune” and “Fung Shui” is the key to success. There is also an abundance of well known hotels in the Pudong area with Intercontinental, Shangri-la and Hyatt all with a presence, soon to be joined by Starwoods “W” and Ritz Carlton.
In addition to setting up a permanent base in Shanghai, Profile’s commitment to the region includes an extensive travel schedule in the region. Winnie Chui and Mark Norris, Profile Group Chief Executive, recently travelled together on an extensive trip to Sanya. Other locations that have been included in our travel schedule include Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Chengdu, Lijiang, Sanya. These “field trips” provide us with valuable feedback on future management needs, trends in specific regions and to gain a real understanding of the candidates we represent by seeing them in their places of work wherever feasible.
